Old posters, approximately over an age of 50 years can be marked ‘Vintage posters’. Posters were the oldest form of advertising. About half a century back, when the reaches of television or other forms of media available nowadays were not present, posters were regarded the best way of mass communication. Printed color posters were extensively utilized for all kinds of declarations & ads. They were held to be the best way of visual media through which public announcements, ads or campaigns were done.

As most of these posters were impressed in huge volume & were meant to be exhibited for street ads, they were not meant to last for long. Normally, cheap paper was used for this purpose. Due to this reason, many of the vintage posters have deteriorated or have been entirely damaged and lost. Even the ones that seem to have endured the scourges of time & been stored away carefully; still have one or more minor damages. There are very rare cases where the vintage posters accessible today have been maintained carefully and available in fabulous condition.

Even if the vintage poster that you buy now is in substantially good form, there is all possibility that its existing condition might degenerate in the next few years. As you are most probably to pay well for your poster, you might as well ascertain that you take the essential cautions to guard them and make sure that they stay fit for many more years down the line.

Posters are extremely sensitive to light. Light radiations tend to cause irreversible damage to your precious poster. It is advisable to frame your posters with UV-resistant glass. The other major preventive is acid. It eats away on your paper. Most of papers on which the vintage posters were printed were of low quality & hence will have high acid content. The effect of acid turns the paper yellow with age and finally brings down it to dust. It is best to use acid-free matting and backing while framing your poster. You should also determine that while framing the poster, the glass does not touch the paper. Contact with glass will cause humidity to damage your poster. It is better to put up a spacer between the glass and the actual poster.

Right conservation ascertains longevity of your commendable vintage poster.
