Glasgow – City Of Glasgow Is One Of The World’s Grandest Cities
Centrally located in the lowlands of Scotland, Glasgow is Scotland’s most populated city and one of the most populated cities in all of the United Kingdom. The origins of the city are associated with the archdiocese of Glasgow. Under the archdiocese, then Bishop of Glasgow was developed. This diocese is believed to have been developed by the Archbishop of York during the 11th century.
The city was greatly involved in the Scottish enlightenment period of the 18th century. This period involved an awakening of an intellectual sort and helped Scotland to become one of the leading intellectual countries in the entire world. The College of Glasgow was an instrumental part of the enlightenment period which witnessed Scotland becoming one of the most literate countries in Europe.
Glasgow further grew in the 18th century as a result of international trade. Trade with the United States in the 18th century and later was greatly affected by the city of Glasgow. This was further spurred by the industrial revolution. Glasgow grew to be a major power in ship building and engineering. This helped to make Glasgow a world class city.
Glasgow became recognized as a world class city In fact it was during this period of time that Glasgow earned the name the second city in the British Empire. In current times Glasgow still plays a major role in business and finance.
This structure is the oldest existing home in all of Glasgow and is now operated as a museum. This home stands in the shadows of the Glasgow Cathedral and the Glasgow Royal armory. However, it is not the oldest structure title goes to the Cathedral. The home was built in 1741 as part of the hospital under the Bishop of Glasgow. It is believed that this home originally housed clergy and support staff for the Cathedral.
This structure is Glasgow’s oldest home and is directly associated with the Church of Glasgow. The church, home and college are all prime examples of Gothic architecture and some of the finest structures still in existence from their period. The home was associated with the church and used as temporary lodging for clergy visiting the area.
The Church of Glasgow is the oldest structure in the city. It is one of the few churches that were built prior to the Enlightenment that are still fully intact. This however was not the first church built in Glasgow. There was a church building in this exact location built by St. Mungo. St. Mungo is the patron saint of Glasgow. These three structures are part of the reason Glasgow is a world-class travel destination and why Glasgow is recognized for it’s incredible architecture.
